Ah, Mark, this kind of captures what I like about your writing: the sprawling curiosity, the willingness to go anywhere. We were big Daniel Pinkwater fans, and fans to of the Internet back when it was weird. There’s still a lot of weird out there, isn’t there?

Thanks, Tom for the compliment, but I think sprawling is just a natural thing for me and for many. I do wonder whether the algorithmic nature of internet sites like TikTok or Instagram or Facebook or ... reins in the delightful sprawl that human beings have by nature. They just serve it all up following the rules of the corporation. Much better to take the hand of luck or a fellow human being than the cold, crusty, grasp of an algorithm!

I so much enjoyed hearing Pinkwater on the radio, when he would review or read a children's book. The voice! The humor! I don't think he'd take it badly, but I think he sounded, uh, FAT! So much I'd love a luxurious hug.

Happy New Year, Tom. I think I need to send you an email just to catch up.

He did sound fat, didn't he? My wife and I had a good laugh remembering reading his stories to the kids and listening to his NPR bits. Those were more innocent days. If you didn't live to damned far away I'd say let's go out for a beer or a walk. I did a Substack authors meet up group with locals the other day, but what I'd really like to do is drag all my favorite Substacks writers together from around the world---Canadians and Brits and Scots and a few Americans! Now that would be fun.
