Until reading this I had had no intention of seeing the move but now I feel compelled to.

I think it's going to be far more substantive than might have been the case if Greta Gerwig hadn't been writer/director. However, there's no question that Mattel has really orchestrated publicity well. They see sales. Maybe they're shooting for a Barbie sale every FIVE seconds.

It seems to be getting a lot of positive intentions from some media people in the UK

Listen, if they can’t get people like you to “promote” it--by which I mean typically Barbie-resistant intellectuals who can embrace it ironically or in a “meta” sense--they’re going to have a big hit on their hands.

Helluva story. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

There's another twist in the B.L.O. story that I didn't include. The group did what they called "reverse shoplifting" or "shop dropping." They took the voice-changed Barbies and G. I. Joes back to toy stores and "restocked" the shelves. FAO Schwarz was among the targets, of course. There was a rather sophisticated media plan, too. Once the B.L.O. got contacted by a reporter, they rushed surgically altered dolls to the toy store nearest to the reporter's office.

It's said that 300-500 dolls were transformed, but the B.L.O. claimed thousands.

I think BGB and I will see it, but I bet we'll wait for the streaming version. We had dinner with some of the family and friends on Wednesday evening, and Barbie was part of the discussion. My daughter-in-law thought that the foundation should have accepted the scholar Barbie and taken the money. "Think of the little kids who would have a positive role model." I'm skeptical.

It's interesting how sometime such stories endear you to the unexpected.

Mark, I’m commenting first only upon reading the title, and I have to tell you my first thought was: “WHAT THE ...?” I didn’t make you for a Barbie fan. Not that there’s anything wrong with it.
