I’ve enjoyed similar immersions into culture with my research into family history, what with the old newspapers and service records. The time spent in the archives sounds wonderful.
A Boulangerie thought: As to under/above ground, what a fun question that feels like a variation of the Schrödinger's Cat problem, i.e., once I open the lid to observe the art/music/theatre, the works will be known to be either under or above ground - and how much observation tips it from the cool recesses of the underground to the stark light of the aboveground? Can I take a peek or is that too much?
Cucci seemed to delight in the "underground" and I wonder whether the underground pooping up from below the surface deadened it for him a bit. It's fun to think of the J. Walter Thompson ad execs and the Ford execs reading this kind of memo, too. I imagine them (especially the Ford people) to be unimaginably "square," to use a term from the era. Would Cucci's irreverence and the underground have sanded their corners a bit?
